The Best Perfumes for the Office
Clean, close-wearing fragrances that smell polished at your desk without filling the room, plus a few rules of office scent etiquette.

A good office fragrance is noticed by the person who leans in and goes unnoticed three desks over. It should smell clean, feel polished and stay close to the skin. Before the list, a few practical points.
Office scent etiquette
- Check your workplace policy. Some offices, hospitals and schools are scent-free.
- Use one or two sprays. You can always add a little more at lunch.
- Apply before you leave home so the loud opening has time to settle.
- Choose scents with low to moderate projection, especially in shared rooms and elevators.
- Save heavy gourmands, big white florals and dense ouds for after hours.
Fresh and citrus
- Acqua di Parma Colonia: classic citrus and lavender that reads clean and grown-up.
- Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil: green mango and grapefruit, light and quiet.
- Tom Ford Neroli Portofino: polished citrus and neroli for warm months.
- Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt: soft, salty and close to the skin.
Woody and aromatic
- Terre d'Hermès: orange, minerals and vetiver, a long-running office favorite.
- Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette: citrus, incense and woods in a versatile everyday scent.
- Tom Ford Grey Vetiver: crisp, clean vetiver with a tailored feel.
- Le Labo Another 13: musky, woody and quiet.
Iris, musk and powdery
- Prada Infusion d'Iris: clean iris that smells expensive at close range.
- Prada L'Homme: iris and neroli with a soft, soapy finish.
- Narciso Rodriguez For Her: musk and rose, quiet and lasting.
- Dior Homme: iris and woods in a refined, easy men's scent.
Soft florals
- Chanel Chance Eau Tendre: grapefruit, quince and soft florals, light and easy.
- Chanel No. 5 L'Eau: a lighter, brighter take on the classic.
- Dior J'adore: smooth white florals that wear well in small doses.
- Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia: fresh pear and freesia, gentle in a crowded room.
Tea and green
- Elizabeth Arden Green Tea: an inexpensive, breezy tea classic.
- Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert: green tea and citrus, created by Jean-Claude Ellena.
- Diptyque Philosykos: fig leaf and wood, green and calm.
Picking the right version
Several of these fragrances come in more than one concentration. For the office, the eau de toilette or lighter version is often the better pick, because it projects less and feels fresher through a long day. If you love a richer eau de parfum, spray it once on the chest under a shirt, where your clothes soften how far it travels.
Pay attention to your own nose, too. After an hour you may stop noticing your perfume, but the people around you still can. That is a normal effect called olfactory fatigue, and it is the most common reason people over-spray at work.
