Fresh and Aquatic Notes: Evoke a Sense of Freedom and Adventure
Calone, dihydromyrcenol and ambroxan built the sea-breeze style. How aquatic fragrances work and the classics that defined them.

Fresh and aquatic fragrances try to capture air and water: sea spray, rain, cool rinsed skin, a breeze off the ocean. Nature gives perfumers no oil that smells like the sea, so this family is built mostly from aroma chemicals, which makes it one of the most modern styles in perfumery.
The materials
Calone is the signature aquatic molecule. Discovered by chemists at Pfizer in the 1960s, it smells like watermelon, oyster shell and sea breeze. In small doses it adds a wet, airy feel. In larger doses it gives the unmistakable marine note of the 1990s. Helional brings a watery, ozonic, slightly green freshness, and Floralozone adds a clean, airy brightness.
Dihydromyrcenol, a fresh citrus-woody material, gives many fresh fragrances their clean, laundry-like sparkle. Ambroxan adds a warm, salty, mineral glow that reads like skin after a day at the beach. Perfumers combine these with natural citrus, lavender, rosemary, mint and sage, with sea salt accords, and with musks that keep the freshness close to the skin. Seaweed and algae extracts exist but are used sparingly because they can smell strongly of iodine.
How fresh and aquatic notes behave on skin
Fresh fragrances feel light, but many of the synthetics in them last well. A classic aquatic often opens bright and loud, then settles into a cool, clean drydown that stays for hours. Ambroxan in particular is known for clinging to skin and clothing. Because these scents smell clean, people sometimes over-spray. Two or three sprays are usually plenty, especially in close quarters like offices, cars and planes.
Humidity helps this family. On a hot, damp day an aquatic can feel cooling, while the same scent in dry winter air may feel thin and fade faster.

When to wear fresh and aquatic scents
This is the family for heat, humidity and movement: summer, vacations, the gym, road trips and casual days. Fresh scents also suit the office because they read clean and inoffensive. In cold weather, try fresh fragrances with a woody or ambery base so they keep some body.
Fresh classics often come in several versions, from eau de toilette to intense and parfum, and pre-loved bottles make it easy to try more than one. Browse the Fresh & Aquatic category on Feelings of Scent, or check Seasonal Scents for summer picks.
